We have a very special agenda coming up for our next ChiTUG meeting on July 25. One of the best ways to sharpen your Tableau skills is to compete in contests to sharpen your game and learn from others. We're very pleased to announce TWO CONTESTS for the next meeting.
The first contest is a local one involving just our chapter. The Weather Company, an IBM Business Unit, is challenging you to use their historical weather data either alone or in connection with another dataset to produce a unique weather viz or analysis. This is the same data that was used for the Iron Viz competition at last year's Tableau Conference. You can read all the rules here. We will judge the entries at the meeting which means you only have two weeks so you better get started soon. Prizes include some cool Weather Company swag and copies of Ryan Sleeper's new book Practical Tableau (see below).
Tableau is sponsoring another user group contest with a musical theme. Read all about it here. We'll have time for networking at the July meeting in case you want to find someone to work with (highly recommended to collaborate). Deadline for submissions is August 23. You can find some music-themed viz inspiration here.
We are also very proud to host Ryan Sleeper at our July meeting. Ryan is a long-time friend of ChiTUG and his topic is Data-Driven Storytelling Tips, a perfect accompaniment for the competitions. Ryan is the founder of Playfair Data and the author of one of my favorite Tableau blogs. His also the author of Practical Tableau (O’Reilly). Ryan - recognized as a Tableau Zen Master, Tableau Iron Viz Champion, and Tableau Public Visualization of the Year author – is here to share storytelling tips from his book that will help your dashboards resonate with your audience. During this session, you will learn the parallels between storytelling and data visualization, tangible tips for effectively using color, how to use psychology to your advantage, and more!
Ryan is also hosting a special two-day Tableau and data visualization training here in Chicago August 13-14. Use code CHITUG during registration for an additional $100 discount.
As always, seating is limited and these events sell out fast. Make sure to make your reservation today. See you on July 25!
