Turn data into a story worth sharing. The Kenya Tableau User Group and ALX invite you to an in-person visual hackathon celebrating creativity, storytelling and data visualization with Tableau. Whether you are new to Tableau or an experienced data professional, this is your opportunity to explore a dataset, uncover an interesting story and bring it to life.
The overall winner will receive funding towards a Tableau certification exam of their choice, valued at up to €400. The winner will be selected from the finalists who attend the in-person event and complete the live pitch.
This is an opportunity to demonstrate your Tableau skills, strengthen your portfolio and compete for a professional certification that can support your career development.
Choose 1 of 3 official datasets and create an original visualization using Tableau. You may build a dashboard, infographic, Tableau Story or another Tableau experience that communicates your findings effectively. You do not need to use the entire dataset or create something highly complex. Focus on a question, pattern or insight that interests you and tell that story clearly.
Elected Government Officials in Kenya
Explore Kenya’s elected officials across different election cycles, political parties, locations and levels of representation.
JKIA Passengers by Destination
Examine passenger movement from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport across different destinations and reporting periods.
Superstore Plus - Kenya
Work with a synthetic Kenyan retail dataset featuring sales, profits, customers, products, counties, delivery performance and returns.
A strong entry should:
Tell a clear and insightful story: Focus on a meaningful question, pattern or discovery and communicate it in a way that is easy to understand.
Be creative and purposeful: Present an original perspective and use Tableau’s visual and interactive features to support your story.
Be accurate and well presented: Ensure your calculations, labels and conclusions are correct, and that your visualization is clear, readable and easy to navigate.
Complexity alone will not win the challenge. One well-developed idea can be more powerful than several unrelated charts.
Choose one of the three official datasets.
Create an original visualization using Tableau.
Publish your finished project on Tableau Public.
Complete the official submission form before the deadline.
Share your work on LinkedIn using #KenyaTUGxALXVizathon.
If shortlisted, attend the final event in person and pitch your visualization to the panel of judges.
The challenge is open to all skill levels, but entries must be completed individually. Each participant may submit one original entry.
Please note: Registering for the in-person event does not automatically enter you into the challenge. You must complete the official submission form and provide a working Tableau Public link to be considered.
After submissions close, all eligible entries will be reviewed and the strongest entries will be shortlisted.
Shortlisted participants will be notified on Wednesday, 16 September 2026 and invited to attend the final event in person. During the event, each finalist will pitch their visualization to a panel of judges, explain their approach and present the main story or insight behind their work.
The pitch is the final stage of the competition. To remain eligible for the overall prize, shortlisted participants must attend the event and present their work to the judging panel. Remote pitches will not be available.
Entries will be assessed using the following criteria:
Storytelling and insights: 40%
Does the visualization communicate a clear story? Is it easy to understand, and does it help the audience discover something meaningful?
Creativity and originality: 30%
Does the entry take an original, thoughtful and engaging approach to the selected dataset?
Presentation and communication: 20%
Can the finalist explain their approach, findings and design choices clearly during the live pitch?
