Eli Holder - Equitable Epidemiology: A Primer for Public Health Data Communicators
Can visualizing health disparities increase health disparities? This talk will cover Eli's research on the intersection of social psychology and data design, in particular, the way that conventional charts (e.g. bar charts of differential mortality risks) can promote harmful stereotypes about the groups being visualized, and how those stereotypes can undermine public health more broadly. We'll cover:
> how certain common types of data visualizations, meant to raise awareness of social disparities, may actually backfire and reinforce
> some of the hidden biases pervasive in charts and graphs covering social outcome disparities;
> how social psychology can influence audiences' perceptions, attitudes, beliefs and behaviour.
You'll also learn how to choose safer, alternative approaches to effectively, ethically present equity-focused dataviz.
